I’ve redeemed myself this month! After what felt like an eternity of not reading consistently, I’m back on my game. Not only did I restart my book club with my sister, but I also set the intention to finish books I already started.  Two of these books were from that ‘currently reading’ list and one I got on a trip to Seattle.

As always, here’s the playlist of July books!

The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (Vol. 1) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu

The restart of our book club. This is a reread for me and the first time reading for my sister. I’m not sure I really believe in what a guilty pleasure entails but if I did, SVSSS would be one. The book itself doesn't take itself seriously and in fact, makes fun of other books like this and tropes in the genre. The main character is hilarious as well.

A Luminous History of the Palm by Jessica Sequeira

This is from a local publishing house in Seattle. The cover drew me to it first and then the back blurb convinced me to buy. I will say I thought this was nonfiction and because of that I was a bit hesitant at first but I ended up enjoying the different vignettes of people throughout time and place.

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

This is a great book. There is tension, anticipation, and it legitimately had me scared at points. I also think the book made great commentary on beauty in society, Nigerian culture, and grief.

The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (Vol. 2) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu

The second book in our book club! This one was a bit harder to enjoy on reread because of how big the miscommunication trope came into play. I knew where it was going and wanted to get there faster.

Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire by Jehad Abusalim, Jennifer Bing, Mike Merryman-Lotze

I started this book in March and have read little by little since. There can’t be enough good things said about Light in Gaza. Each section and author takes a bit of themselves and shares it. This has both educational and personal chapters, as well as poetry and photography. I loved this book! Please read it. Here is a link to download this and other Palestinian books for free from Haymarket Books.

I’m also sharing a link to a GoFundMe for The Zaynab Project from Project Olive Branch. If you’re able to, please consider donating and sharing.
