September 2023 Wrap-up
Happy September!
Loves:
The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yōko Ogawa
This book! This author! There is just something about it that sucks you in. A story about people and how they make connections to each other. Its prose and characters are just beautiful.
Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin
Another beautiful book. It's filled with poetic descriptions of Parisian life. The scenes and people come to life and build a picturesque backdrop to David and Giovanni’s story.
Likes:
Thousand Autumns (Vol. 2) by Meng Xi Shi
So much world building! I can feel the story hitting its stride and the cliffhanger should be illegal.
The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo
A slow burn that felt really impactful. Almost felt like a bunch of short stories because of the format but I loved the history and mythology woven in. The meta aspects of it also were interesting. My sister got the second book out from the library so I’m excited to read that.
The Employees by Olga Ravn
Strange and alien. Disjointed and Fragmented. What a bizarre little book. Ravn really created an interesting situation that leaves more questions than answers. What does it mean to be alive? To be human?
