Welcome fall! Welcome to fall reading!
As always, here’s my bookshop playlist.
I’m sharing a link to a GoFundMe for Hala and her family. If you’re able to, please consider donating and sharing.
Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
What an epic book. Every detail, every heartbreak seared from page to mind. Adjei-Brenyah is a master at his craft. This is one of my favorite books I’ve read in 2024.
The Between by Tananarive Due
Another book that I couldn’t put down. This is part mystery, ghost story, and thriller. It’s a commentary on race in America, fate and fighting against it, and mental illness. The writing style was consistent and held a haunting quality and the characters were complex with flaws and strengths. I can’t wait to read more by her.
The Girl from the Other Side (Vol. 1-3) by Nagabe
I’ve been saving this series for fall and it did not disappoint! I think I’ve read a couple of chapters online before and knew I wanted to see the art in person. There’s mystery, heart, and action to recommend it. I can’t wait to read more.
Foster by Claire Keegan
My family listened to this as an audiobook on a long car ride. I didn’t read the summary or know what it was about and I’m glad I went into the novel this way. What a read. It felt epic in the way the ordinary does. My heart went for a ride throughout this, warming and going haywire. I absolutely loved it.
We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Another audiobook we listened to. I later found out the author has made transphobic comments and continues to speak about them so I won’t review.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
A book that came into my life not for myself but as a present for my mom from my sister and me. She immediately put it in my sister’s room so you can guess how that present turned out. I picked this up to read for a book club and I have mixed thoughts. It’s relatively easy to read, the prose style keeps the pace. I loved the characters and cried and laughed with them all. There was racism, antisemitism, slut-shaming throughout the story.
The Summer Hikaru Died (Vol. 1-3) by Mokumokuren
I always log the manga every three volumes and it took months for the library to get the third one in. This LGBTQIA horror manga was such an interesting take on the ‘come back wrong’ trope. I loved the characters' interactions and coming to terms with what happened. There’s a mystery that is also keeping me invested.
The Girl from the Other Side (Vol. 4-6) by Nagabe
Ah, I love this series. The mystery is expanding, with more characters, and continuing trouble for Teacher and Shiva. I’m not sure I’m following the lore completely here but I love the vibes and will continue reading!
