What a busy and overwhelming month. My reading journey for April reflects this. This was the first month of 2024 where there wasn’t a specific ‘challenge’ that I participated in and as a result, I felt a bit listless in my reading.
Here is a link to the month’s playlist over on Bookshop.
I liked parts of these books but nothing stuck out as a whole. What an introduction to a monthly wrap-up. Enjoy.
The Borrow a Boyfriend Club by Page Powars
The only introduction I had to this book equated the ‘vibes’ to Ouran Host Club. Because of this, I thought this book would be much more comedic. The more serious tone took a second to get used to but after, I enjoyed this read. The book follows a trans teen and new student, Noah, who wants to cement his masculinity by joining the Italian Club, secretly known as the Borrow a Boyfriend Club. Noah was a complex character who pulled the story together. I loved his bravery in the face of doubt and wit despite being a teenager and coming to terms with himself. What I wanted more of was the club characters! Their dynamics were such fun and I wanted more of the actual club.
We Had to Remove This Post by Hanna Bervoets
I read a variety of reviews that ranged from positive to negative before reading this. The beginning of the book hit all the spots I wanted. There was a satisfying build-up to the climax, grotesque allusions and descriptions of what the moderators saw, and references to their real lives as well. But the end of the book just didn’t live up to the rest of it.
Monthly in the Garden with My Landlord (vol. 1) by Yodokawa
This book was a sweet read but I didn’t completely love the dynamics between characters. I did like the art and would read more of this series though.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (vol. 4-6) by Kanehito Yamada, Tsukasa Abe
I love this story! The only reason I think I didn’t like this more was because I just finished the anime and it follows the manga closely.
