I can’t believe that it’s already July! June flew by and dragged in equal measures. It was a hectic month and although my cup was filled from seeing friends, being in a wedding, and hiking along the PCT, I’m tired and have very little reading to show for June.
Luckily, I can feel the urge to read coming back so I hope July is full of some good stories.
Here is a link to the month’s playlist over on Bookshop. Both of these books were for the Queer Palestine Readathon I participated in.
No Olive Branch For Me by Nadia Shammas and Natasha Alterici
No Olive Branch is a poignant and powerful short comic. It explores what it means to be displaced, while looking at how people are still expected to represent their culture and heritage in the face of opposition. In 6 pages, we get a glimpse into this in a thoughtful and encapsulating way. Aiding the story is the art, which is stunning and adds so much. It is free to read online and I recommend checking it out.
Squire by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh
I can’t say enough good things about this! The art in this is stunning. The world-building and character-building it presents tell of so much history without words. The book navigates truth and history in a complex way that is easily digestible. It tackles big subjects while also feeling grounded and shows the humanity and smaller foibles of growing up in the children it follows.
